SOAR Transitions Secondary

SOAR Youth Program

The foundation of this program will help participants in secondary school identified with a primary diagnosis of Learning Disabilities and/or ADHD to develop life skills to succeed academically and vocationally. Information and resources on post-secondary endeavors will be provided with assistance for making academic and career choices.

Session Topics:

Session 1: Personal Development: Life Goals, Self-Awareness, Learning Preferences, and Self-Advocacy

This session facilitates the student(s) in understanding their future objectives and devising effective strategies to attain them. By prioritizing this aspect in the initial session, it establishes a clear roadmap for them to reference and contemplate as they progress through subsequent program topics. This session is important in fostering self-awareness among the student(s), enabling them to delve deeper into their learning preferences and identify tailored support mechanisms. Lastly, it addresses the crucial skill of self-advocacy, empowering students with the ability to discern their needs and effectively articulate them.

Session 2: Cultivating Positive Habits: Exploring Core Values, Stress Management, and Organizational Skills Development

This session is designed to facilitate the student(s) in the development and maintenance of constructive habits through activities and insightful discussions. Students have the opportunity to explore their fundamental values and beliefs, fostering deep self-reflection and a clearer sense of personal aspirations. Moreover, the session offers insights into stress management techniques and strategies for developing organizational skills, essential elements for navigating transitions effectively.

Session 3: Maximizing Post-Secondary Success: Exam and Study Strategies, Coping Techniques, Accommodations, and Career Readiness Discussions

This session provides the student(s) with an opportunity to explore a range of study techniques and exam insights. Discussions include coping strategies and accommodations pertinent to the workplace, internships, and post-secondary education, equipping the student(s) with the knowledge of how to access necessary support. Additionally, the session encourages dialogue on future employment aspirations, and guides the student(s) in creating plans to achieve their career objectives. Overall, the session focuses on successful strategies, coping mechanisms, and navigating next steps with confidence and effectiveness.

Session 4: Empowering Transitions: Essential Job Skills, Financial Management, and Strategies and Tips for Success

This session is designed to empower the student(s) during their transitional phase by providing them with information on essential job skills and financial management. It offers the student(s) an opportunity to assess their existing knowledge in these areas and develop tailored strategies to facilitate their transition effectively. Incorporating a variety of tips, templates, and strategies, the session equips the student(s) with practical tools to navigate important aspects of their transition, including readiness for employment, entry into post-secondary education, financial management, budgeting, and more. The student(s) takes home the workbook that they used during the duration of the program to serve as a reference guide as they embark on their journey into post-secondary endeavors.

*Please note that session plans and topics are subject to change or rearrangement at the discretion of the SOAR facilitator(s) depending on the needs of the student(s)*

Learning Objectives:

  • Understanding LDs/ADHD and learning preferences (i.e. review psycho-educational assessment).
  • Develop self-advocacy strategies for success (i.e. review (I.E.P.) Individual Education Plan).
  • Build executive function skills (i.e. organization, time management, etc.)
  • Preparation for school assessments (i.e. test, exam, assignment).
  • Transitioning into post-secondary endeavors (workplace, apprenticeships, College, university) with strategies to ease anxiety or stress.

How Group Sessions at Schools Work:

  • Designed for participants in Grade 12, identified with Learning Disabilities and/or ADHD.
  • Customized 4 sessions at your school during the daytime.
  • Varying time frame 45-60 minutes per session.
  • Minimum 6 participants to facilitator. (Max 8)
  • Parents can request schools to bring the SOAR program into their schools, it is ultimately up to the school to invite us to deliver the program
  • Fee: $200 per group - 4 sessions

How One-to-One Sessions Work:

  • Designed for participants in Grade 12, identified with Learning Disabilities and/or ADHD.
  • Customized 4 sessions at LDAYS office or virtual (1:1 Participant to Facilitator).
  • Varying time frame 45-60 minutes per session.
  • Evening sessions may be available by appointment only.
  • Fee: $50 per session for non members and $35 per session for members - minimum 4 sessions
