SoAR Mindful Transitions: Secondary
The foundation of the SoAR (Some Assembly Required) program will help Grade 11 or Grade 12 participants identified with a primary diagnosis of Learning Disabilities and/or ADHD to feel empowered to develop the life skills necessary to succeed academically and vocationally.
Transitioning is a difficult task in which many students can face unique challenges. Our 1-to-1 sessions are designed to provide targeted support based on the student's needs, aiming to address these challenges head-on.
The program consists of four (4), 45-60 minute sessions with the following session topics:
Session 1: Personal Development: Life Goals, Self-Awareness, Learning Preferences, and Self-Advocacy
This session facilitates the student(s) in understanding their future objectives and devising effective strategies to attain them. By prioritizing this aspect in the initial session, it establishes a clear roadmap for them to reference and contemplate as they progress through subsequent program topics. This session is important in fostering self-awareness among the student(s), enabling them to delve deeper into their learning preferences and identify tailored support mechanisms. Lastly, it addresses the crucial skill of self-advocacy, empowering students with the ability to discern their needs and effectively articulate them.
Session 2: Cultivating Positive Habits: Exploring Core Values, Stress Management, and Organizational Skills Development
This session is designed to facilitate the student(s) in the development and maintenance of constructive habits through activities and insightful discussions. Students have the opportunity to explore their fundamental values and beliefs, fostering deep self-reflection and a clearer sense of personal aspirations. Moreover, the session offers insights into stress management techniques and strategies for developing organizational skills, essential elements for navigating transitions effectively.
Session 3: Maximizing Post-Secondary Success: Exam and Study Strategies, Coping Techniques, Accommodations, and Career Readiness Discussions
This session provides the student(s) with an opportunity to explore a range of study techniques and exam insights. Discussions include coping strategies and accommodations pertinent to the workplace, internships, and post-secondary education, equipping the student(s) with the knowledge of how to access necessary support. Additionally, the session encourages dialogue on future employment aspirations, and guides the student(s) in creating plans to achieve their career objectives. Overall, the session focuses on successful strategies, coping mechanisms, and navigating next steps with confidence and effectiveness.
Session 4: Empowering Transitions: Essential Job Skills, Financial Management, and Strategies and Tips for Success
This session is designed to empower the student(s) during their transitional phase by providing them with information on essential job skills and financial management. It offers the student(s) an opportunity to assess their existing knowledge in these areas and develop tailored strategies to facilitate their transition effectively. Incorporating a variety of tips, templates, and strategies, the session equips the student(s) with practical tools to navigate important aspects of their transition, including readiness for employment, entry into post-secondary education, financial management, budgeting, and more. The student(s) takes home the workbook that they used during the duration of the program to serve as a reference guide as they embark on their journey into post-secondary endeavors.
